Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the name for a range of similar conditions, including Asperger syndrome, that affects an indvidual's social interaction, communication, interests and behaviour. In children with ASD, symptoms are present before the age of 3 years of age, although a diagnosis can sometimes be made after the age of 3 years of age. It is estimated that about 1 in every 100 people in th UK has ASD.
More males than females are diagnosed with ASD. There's no "cure" for ASD, but speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, education support, plus a number of other intervention are available to help children and parents.
Signs and symptoms
In early infancy, some children with ASD don't babble or use other vocal sounds. Older children have problems using non-verbal behaviours to interact with others - for example:
- They have difficulty with eye contact
- Facial expressions
- Body language
- Gestures
Childran make also lack awareness of and interest in other children. They'll often gravitate towards older or younger children, rather than children their own age. They tend to play alone.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioural disorder that includes symptoms such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
Symptoms of ADHD tend to be noticed at an early age and may become more noticeable when a child's circumstances change, such as when they start school. Most cases are diagnosed when children are between 6 and 12 yearsof age.
Thesymtoms of ADHD usually improve with age, but may adults who were diagnosedat a young age continue to experience problems. People with ADHD may also have additional problems, such as as sleep anxiety disorders.
